Issue 141
New Year has come early to The Modal Shop - it's officially 2020 here in Cincinnati as our corporate calendar has just officially flipped from 2019. This year we continue our commitment to bringing you quality technical and educational content. Check out our new Vibration Calibration Webinar Series below. We are contemplating a similar Pressure and Acoustic Calibration Webinar Series later in the year - would you be interested?
Join Us! Calibration Webinar Series

We invite you to join us for our upcoming webinar series Vibration Calibration: From Sensor Selection to Calibration Results. Calibration experts Patrick Timmons and Mike Dillon will host three sessions, including time for questions and answers. Learn more below and register today!

Accelerometer Design: What You Need to Know to Select the Best Accelerometer for Your Test
Thursday, October 24th | 2:30 pm EDT | 60 minutes
Join us to learn the basic operating principles of various accelerometer designs, the physics behind their operation, and why they are selected for various applications. We will also discuss design decisions for accelerometers and how these choices determine a sensor's specifications. Special focus will be given to reference accelerometers.

Accelerometer Calibration: From Mechanical to Electrical Techniques
Thursday, November 14th | 2:30 pm EST | 60 minutes
Join us for a discussion of calibration methods used for accelerometers and the associated calibration standards. We will cover the different types of excitation from portable to shock exciters and the typical failure modes of sensors. Learn more about a range of approaches to calibration.

Calibration Measurement Results: The Effects of Shaker and Accelerometer Choices
Thursday, December 5th | 2:30 pm EST | 45 minutes
Join us for a look at transverse sensitivity measurements and an overview of the relationship between transverse sensitivity and the vibration calibration exciter characteristic of transverse motion. The specific effect of shaker transverse motion on measurement uncertainty and a summary of typical vibration calibration uncertainty will be covered.

Tip of the Month

Have you ever wondered why handheld shakers use the frequency 159.2 Hz? It might seem random, but there's a good reason, and it comes down to math (and illustrates the beauty of the metric system, too). Read on to learn more!

Blast from the Past
Know Your Standard: ISO 16063

In the past, we have written a series of articles looking at several common misinterpretations of the ISO 16063-21 standard stating methods for the calibration of vibration and shock transducers.
For any reader interested in expanding and calculating their own back-to-back accelerometer calibration uncertainty budget, ISO 16063-21 can provide an excellent reference point for equations and example calculations of uncertainty contributors. Beyond back-to-back vibration, the ISO 16063 group contains...
